Beaches

Renowned for its black lava rock and white sandy beaches, Gran Canaria is a perfect family holiday destination. Playa del Ingles is probably the most popular beach on the island and is situated on the south coast along with Puerto Rico beach. For something a bit quieter try Puerto de Mogan or San Agustin beaches.

Pico de Las Nieves

6,394 feet above sea level, Pico de Las Nieves is the highest point on the island. On a clear day, from the summit, there are magnificent views of the surrounding countryside. You can reach the top by either hiking or by taking the scenic drive up narrow roads, passing through beautiful villages on the way.

Jardin Botanico Viera & Clavijo

These magnificent botanical gardens opened in 1952. It comprises an area of 27 acres with up to 500 plant species native to the Canary Islands. This is a great day out if you're staying close to Las Palmas.

More About Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria offers an electric mix of good beaches, superb weather, sophisticated nightlife and wonderful scenery all combined with an interesting history. The island has many luxury hotels offering excellent facilities and there are approximately 80 beaches where you can chill out or take to the sparkling waters and perhaps do a bit of snorkelling or scuba diving. Maspalomas is a firm favourite with families and couples who are looking for a relaxed holiday environment. There are plenty of hotels, and great beaches and it‘s very well-placed for getting out to the local water parks and for taking day trips to see local sites. Inland, you get to see quaint villages, rugged mountains and lush forests - it's a hiker's haven! Just a few minutes away from Maspalomas and bordering the famous sand dunes, lies the newly built resort of Playa Meloneras. This is a wonderful choice for couples as it has plenty of designer shops, five-star hotels and lots of bars and restaurants - perfect for you to enjoy a luxury holiday in Gran Canaria. Puerto Mogan is the resort to head for if you are looking for a more authentic Canarian experience. The whitewashed houses on tree-lined streets lead down to a golden beach. You can rest up at the picture-perfect harbour and watch the yachts and boats come in or head into town to explore the shops, bars and restaurants. There's a good network of bus routes so getting around is simple. Taxis are also plentiful and you could hire a car if you like the flexibility of coming and going at your own pace plus you can go 'off the beaten track' to the smaller villages and a bit further afield. The island has 8 golf courses, nature parks, local sites and attractions, water parks and lots of beaches where you could just spend time soaking up the sun if you wish.
