Staying in a Ryokan offers all visitors a wonderful opportunity to taste the true flavour of traditional Japanese life, including Japanese-style bathing, traditional clothing, futon bedding and authentic cuisine. Ryokan are characterised by a high quality of service, including a personal maid in many establishments. Prices vary from budget to luxury options. Most of the ryokan has onsen, a Japanese hot spring bath . Onsen is communal but if you don't like the idea, book a room with a private onsen, hire a similar facility by the hour or use the en-suite facility. Always check before booking. Temple stay 'SHUKUBO' Temple lodging or shukubo, as it is known, is a lovely way to experience a quieter, simpler, more spiritual life, and a temple stay also offers you the opportunity to learn more about their religion by experiencing temple life first hand. All temples have different expectations of visitors. Some require visitors to rise early with the monks for morning chanting or to help with temple chores, whilst others leave guests to decide how involved they wish to become in temple life. It is best to clarify these details before making a reservation. Temple facilities are generally very simple, however many have constructed special facilities to accommodate visitors and include vegetarian food. The most famous place for shukubo is Mount Koya near Osaka, where about 50 temples offer lodgings.
