British Virgin Islands - My Kind of Paradise

British Virgin Islands - My Kind of Paradise

I was so excited, I'd never been to the Caribbean before and here I was being told this was the best area of all. Were they telling the truth? First stop was the Bitter End Yacht Club. The rooms tumble down the hillside and I was shown to a room with fantastic views. Rooms have all necessary amenities but no room key – no need for those in this safe haven. There was even a hammock on the veranda – a perfect spot to relax, that is the reason people come here after all. Apart from relaxation, the Bitter End Yacht club is perfect for those who enjoy water sports. I’d definitely recommended it to those who like activities based on the water, ideal for sporty youngsters who like to try as much as possible. In the evenings the scene is lively with a good restaurant and entertainment. Next stop was Biras Creek at a Relais & Chateaux property with a relaxed, refined atmosphere. The emphasis is definitely on quality “together time”. Accommodation here was in a one bedroom cottage and properties were complete with outdoor rain showers. The layout is all about privacy. The restaurant is renowned for its ambience, service and food and I found it to be absolutely outstanding. If you are looking for activities at this resort then there are really good walking and cycling trails all over the islands with stunning views of the ocean. Why not have a picnic made up by the obliging staff and take off for the day? Or perhaps take out a boat and go exploring to nearby hideaways. If you don’t fancy being captain of your own boat don’t worry, boat taxis can be arranged should you fancy a change of scenery day or night. After my wonderful stay at Biras Creek (which ended all too soon) it was time to move on to Guana Island, a unique private island hideaway. This is the place to come for complete escapism...don’t bring your mobile or your laptop - just come to escape. The setting is amazing and on approach by boat I felt a great excitement as I had been told it was out of this world. Accommodation is in simple but elegant white washed cottages. However if you are feeling very indulgent you can rent the owners villa with two pools and Jacuzzis for you to share with your family and friends. The infinity pool area is the ideal place to enjoy quality time together and is perfect for pre-dinner drinks before heading to the main house for dinner. Of course if you prefer, you can dine in your villa. The ambience is relaxed and friendly with a lounge where guests can mingle. My visit to the BVI’s was going too fast and before I knew it we were heading to our final destination of Peter Island. After leaving Guana and hoping the hibiscus flower proves to be truthful (see below) I enjoyed a tour of the North Sound which included a visit to “the baths” – large granite boulders that offer some dramatic scenery and fun for all. Then it was on to Peter Island; an up-market choice popular with many celebrities. Facilities here include a superb spa, large swimming pool, superb restaurants and several excellent beaches. As with all the islands and resorts I visited, the service was first class. So...had I been told the truth that these islands really are the best in the Caribbean? I truly think so; it will be very hard to beat them. Ask me in a few years when I have had the chance to explore some more of the Caribbean and let’s see if I still say the same. I know for sure that they are a small corner of this world which offers stunning scenery, outstanding sailing opportunities and genuinely lovely people who really do go out of their way to spoil you. The story of the Hibiscus flower at Guana Island - as you leave Guana you feel a sense of sadness at leaving a place so perfect, time stands still here and everything is about you and what you feel like doing or not doing. As the boat draws away from the jetty you are offered an Hibiscus flower, you throw this from the boat and the story goes that if your Hibiscus reaches the shore you will one day return to Guana – I really hope so as it is a place that I feel very honoured to have visited and I really hope to return with my loved ones
