Hurtigruten, the Norwegian Costal Voyage?along the majestic coastline of Norway, has been described as 'The World's Most Beautiful Voyage'. Guests can experience the natural delights of a land of unforgettable experiences.

Vital Link to remote Coastal Communities

Hurtigruten's?service was originally created over 110 years ago as a vital link to the remote coastal communities, carrying supplies and passengers to 34 ports along the rugged coastline between Bergen and Kirkenes, close to the Russian border.

On Board

Operating almost daily, the ships have panoramic lounges, restaurants with good food, and well appointed cabins. They are not cruise ships, so do not have the entertainment programme of other cruises. However, the ships are able to sail closer to the coastline on the way to each port or fjord.

Explorer Voyages

In addition to these conventional coastal voyages, Hurtigruten also offers Explorer Voyages on ships specifically built for this type of voyage, accompanied by expert guides. The modern MS Fram journeys to the largely unexplored North and Southern Arctic Oceans, taking in the stunning scenery of Greenland and?Spitsbergen. The ship's interior has been inspired by the Arctic region and there are leisure facilities onboard.

South America and Antarctica

She also sails at appropriate times from South America to Antarctica, where guests can watch the sight of whales, penguins and seals, as well as the magic of the Midnight Sun. There is full use of Zodiacs, Polar Circle Boats (like rigid Zodiacs) and Tenders, so guests should be reasonably fit.

The line also offers 6-day Polar Encounters, using the comfortable, purpose-built MV Polar Star, with its attractive public rooms. Destinations include the remote landscape of Moffen Island.

The Costal Voyage Fleet

The Costal Voyage fleet is large; the most recent three ships built in 2002 and 2003 are the Midnatsol and?Trollfjord, all around 16000 tons carrying around 800 passengers. There are also six other ‘modern’ ships built between 1993 and 1997, the Nordnorge, Nordkapp, Polarlys, Richard With, Nordlys,?and Kong Harald all around 11,000 to 12,000 tons carrying around 700 passengers.

The Costal Voyage?'Classic' Fleet

The Costal Voyage?'Classic' fleet consists of three ships, the 6,261 ton Vesteralen built in 1983 carrying?510 passengers, the?2,621 ton Lofoten built 1964?carrying?400 passengers, and finally the smallest the 2,193 ton Nordstjernen built 1956?carrying?400 passengers. Although these ships are old they have been refurbished and offer the passenger a real classic boat experience.

Other purpose built ships

The newest ship the Fram built in 2007 is 11,642 tons carrying 318 passengers and 150 crew; she is?unlike the rest of the fleet and is not a 'working' ship but designed for expedition cruising as described above.

And finally the?3,500 ton Polar Star built in 1966 was originally an icebreaker and was converted and upgraded?for expedition cruising; it?is specifically equipped for Polar waters. She carries?around 100?passengers and 40 crew.
